WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing a website to increase its visibility in search engines.
Moz defines SEO as “the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engines.”
Implementing proper SEO strategies into your marketing plan ensures your company website can be found on search engines for the words and phrases your potential consumers are actively searching for.

Sounds pretty simple, right?
There is a big “yeah, but” coming up.
But, SEO is a complex process, with many different variables involved (some you can and can not control) along with many different strategies and disciplines needed to get results.
It requires knowledge of many different things to get those results and it takes time to work.

THE PURPOSE OF LOUISVILLE SEO
The main purpose of Louisville SEO is to help your site rank (or show up) as high as possible in the search results when people search for your product or service on Google or other search engines. You can have the most amazing website in the world, but if no one knows it’s there, it isn’t going to help you get more customers or make any money.
Maybe the simplest way to explain it is: the higher you rank on Google, the more people see your site. The more that people see your site, the more customers and sales you will get.
When people do a search on Google, they are typically not searching for your business by name. Most people do not search for “Joe’s Auto Shop”. The only people that perform searches for your business name are your current customers.
When people are looking for a product or service, most search on Google to find whatever they are looking for. They search “Louisville plumber” or “Louisville dentist”. These customers are actively searching for your services and are ready to buy. All you have to do is position your business so they can find you.
According to biakelsey.com, 97% of consumers use some form of online media when researching products or services in their local area and 90% use search engines. So if you’re a local business, being visible to customers searching for your products or services online can give you a tremendous advantage.
The fact is searchers click on one of the top 3 spots in the Google search results 70% of the time and 95% of searchers never look past the first page. If local customers searching for the products or services that you sell and you’re not at least on the first page, you’re not going to get their business. Your competitors will.
Search for “Your City Your Industry” on Google. (Example: Louisville plumber, Louisville dentist) The top 3 results are the competitors who are getting all of the business from local customers. This doesn’t mean those companies are the best in the industry, but they are more likely to be clicked on by local customers simply because of where they show up in the search results.
HOW DOES LOUISVILLE SEO WORK?
The video above explains it pretty well, but basically, there are hundreds of ranking factors that Google uses to rank your site in the organic search results (the listings underneath the advertisements at the top).
In fact there are over 200 ranking factors!
But we turned 200 into 3.
What we mean is, we categorized all 200 ranking factors into 3 simple ones.
This is a big one. What is on your website has to tell Google what your site is about and what it is trying to rank for.
For example, if you are a window installer, Google needs to be able to quickly tell that your site is about window installation.
How do you do this?
You must have content that is both relevant and resourceful to your site visitors. The more you have, the more Google will start to correlate your site to your industry.
When you work with our online marketing company, the first step of SEO we do for our clients is create content around their services/products. We then optimize that content using an SEO strategy that has been tailored to you. All this combined will achieve the ultimate goal of relevance.
This factor is a two-parter…
1. Domain Age: Trust has a lot to do with how old your site is. The older the site, the more likely Google is to trust that site more and suggest it to searchers.
2. Links: Trust is also influenced by incoming links. These are the links that come from external websites to your website.
If you have multiple external links from Google-trusted websites to your site, then Google will be more willing to suggest your site to its searchers.
During this step, our team continues to build onto the relevant content. Our content coordinators and SEO expert do this by creating content that answers industry-specific questions. This could be through FAQs, blog posts, and/or answering specific questions your customers are not getting answered by your competitors. This type of content will give you a better chance of gaining quality organic links to your website from Google-trusted websites.
This is another two-part factor…
1. Industry: How many businesses in your industry are in the area you want to target? How many of those are optimizing their websites?
The density of the competition in your industry can have a huge effect on how easy or hard it will be to rank in the search results. The more competition in your industry, the harder it will be to rank. Simple as that.
If you are the only plumber in the city, then you will have a much easier time being found online versus if you are one plumber among fifty in one city.
2. Location: It is harder to show up in the search results for a specific city in which you do not have a physical address.
For instance, if you are an accountant whose office is in Shepherdsville, KY, but the clients you would like to target are in Louisville, KY. This is a case of Proximity of Address to the Point of Search.
If your business is not in the area in which you want your clients to be located, it will take a bit more effort to show up in the results when those clients do a Google search for your service/product.
The factors and their importance change over time. The methods used to rank a site today may not work next month, so it’s critical to keep up with these changes and be able to adapt in order to maintain your site’s visibility.
This is the biggest hurdle for business owners to learn and manage Louisville SEO themselves. They are busy running their businesses, so even if they find the time to learn some basics, a month from now, what they’ve learned may no longer be relevant.
Louisville SEO is an ongoing process. It isn’t a “set and forget” strategy. You have to continually be adding to your site in order to see improvements in your visibility.
